Services

uniIT

As a core service, uniIT provides local storage space at the university for units and projects (GFS – group file service) and people (PFS – personal file service). This high-quality and highly available storage space is intended for everyday work of researchers, project teams, units, and groups and is subject to regular backup. For company-relevant data from personal everyday work, uniIT provides a storage space for staff members, to which only the respective persons have access. These services can also be used from outside the university network and with non-workstation computers.

Storage space offered through the university is to be preferred to external storage options (offline and in the cloud) for all work processes: data security is to be ensured through regular storage routines and with regard to data protection, uniIT's services are oriented towards the Austrian Data Protection Act and the DSGVO.

Requirements for requesting storage space can be found on the intranet.

Help and training

There are different proposed solutions for each stage in data management.

Regular, high-frequency data usage:

  • Option A: Data is stored in team members' personal file service (PFS); only individual team members have access to the data. The university PFS is hosted on university servers and is part of the university backup strategy based on daily snapshots (4:00 AM): Data storage is provided by the university IT department (uniIT). Data is stored redundantly in two data centers in different buildings on campus. Daily backups are stored on a hard disk array and later moved to tape.
  • Variant B: Project data is stored on a group file service (GFS) to which all team members have access. The university GFS is hosted on university servers and is part of the university backup strategy based on daily snapshots (4:00 AM): Data storage is provided by the university IT department (uniIT). Data is stored redundantly in two data centers in different buildings on campus. Daily backups are backed up to a hard drive array and later moved to tape.

Irregular, occasional data usage:

  • Infrequently accessed or modified data is best stored on CEPH storage with flexible accessibility. The university cloud (cloud.uni-graz.at) is hosted on university servers and is part of the university's backup strategy. Daily snapshots are backed up to a disk array and later moved to tape. Special solutions for managing raw data on local storage can be requested from the IT department.
