A careful and planned handling of research data is part of good scientific practice and serves the traceability and re-usability of research data. A tool that can be used to plan and document these requirements is the data management plan (DMP). The aspects of digital research and the handling of research data are documented here in mostly tabular form already at the beginning of the project planning. This documentation is also helpful in the course of data archiving and dissemination, as it contains relevant information that is beneficial for storing in a repository and for individuals who intend to reuse the data.

In addition to workshops and consulting services, the Coordination Office for Research Data Management offers assistance in creating data management plans as well as support in finding suitable repositories.

Help and training

Explanations and templates for the data management plan can be obtained from the respective funding agencies. In addition to DMP templates, they also offer completion guides that list a number of appropriate questions for the respective categories of the DMP.

  • FWF Research Data Management (German / English)
  • FFG: no template for a DMP is offered, but reference is made to various online tools
  • Horizon Europe: DMP requirements are described in the Program Guide. A DMP template is offered.

DMPs should be created as machine-readable documents to facilitate automated record linking. DMPs are to be understood as public documents and should be published on the project website, or, even better, together with the respective datasets in the repository. They not only describe the data, but can also be seen as an advertisement for the research project.
